Making Small Furries More Comfortable in Their Senior Years

May 21, 2025

As small pets like hamsters, guinea pigs, and gerbils get older, their needs change. Just like us, they may slow down, develop health concerns, or find certain activities more difficult. Bayswater Vets’ team in Bayswater share below how making small adjustments to their habitat can help keep them comfortable and happy in their golden years.

Creating a senior-friendly habitat for your small pets

Easier access to food and water

Older small pets may struggle with climbing or reaching for food and water. Ensure bowls and bottles are positioned at a comfortable height and are easy to use. A shallow dish can be helpful for those with arthritis or mobility issues.

Soft, supportive bedding

As they age, small pets may develop joint stiffness or become more sensitive to hard surfaces. Our vets at Bayswater Vets explain that providing soft, dust-free bedding like paper-based options can help cushion their movements and improve comfort.

Gentle exercise options

Young hamsters and gerbils love to zoom around, but older ones may need gentler exercise. Choose a solid-surface wheel rather than a barred one to reduce strain on their joints, and provide tunnels and ramps that aren’t too steep.

Easier navigation

Reducing obstacles and avoiding high platforms can prevent falls and injuries. If your pet’s enclosure has multiple levels, consider creating a single-level setup to make movement easier.

Extra warmth

Bayswater Vets’ team advise that older pets may struggle to regulate their body temperature. Keeping their habitat in a warm, draught-free area and providing snuggly hideouts can help them stay cosy, especially in winter.

Regular health checks matter

As small pets age, they are more prone to health issues such as arthritis, weight loss, and dental problems. Regular check-ups with our vets at Bayswater Vets can catch problems early and help ensure they remain happy and comfortable.
