Why Insure Your Pet and What Type of Cover is Best

As pet owners, we all want the best for our furry (and scaley or feathered) companions, but unexpected vet bills can quickly add up. While insurance doesn’t cover everything, it can offer valuable peace of mind, helping you manage costs and access care more easily when it matters most.

Here’s why our vets in Bayswater believe taking out pet insurance is a smart decision for both you and your companion. We're happy to talk through your options with you.

Why insure your pet?

According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), around one in three pets will need veterinary treatment each year. Bayswater Vets' team share that having pet insurance means you're better prepared for these situations, helping to ensure your pet can get the treatment they need without delay.

1. Accidents

Just like us, pets can have mishaps. Whether it’s a fall, a cut paw, a broken bone or even a road traffic accident, emergencies can happen at any time. Our vets in Bayswater are here to help and insurance can help you cover the unexpected costs of treatment. Ensure you have our number - 020 7229 2040 - in your phone in case of emergency.

2. Acute illnesses

Sudden illnesses, such as pancreatitis, infections or severe vomiting and diarrhoea, can require rapid veterinary care, sometimes including diagnostics, hospitalisation or surgery. Insurance can help reduce the stress of these sudden costs so you can focus on your pet’s recovery.

3. Long-term conditions

Some health problems, such as diabetes, arthritis, heart disease or a cruciate ligament rupture, may need ongoing care and regular medication. Insurance can make it easier to manage these expenses over time. Conditions like cancer or unexplained growths can also require extensive treatment, including advanced diagnostics, surgery with our vets at Bayswater Vets, chemotherapy, or specialist referral. Without insurance, these costs could quickly become unmanageable.

4. Avoiding financial strain

It’s impossible to predict when a medical issue will arise, but the financial pressure that comes with unexpected vet bills can be significant. Pet insurance allows you to spread the cost of care over time through a monthly or annual premium. For example, while average premiums can range from around £200 to £300 per year depending on breed, age, policy type and cover amount, the cost of treating a serious condition or surgery can easily run into the thousands.

5. Specialised treatments and referrals

Bayswater Vets' team explain that veterinary care now includes options like advanced diagnostics, specialist surgery and treatments such as physiotherapy or hydrotherapy. Pet insurance can make it more realistic to explore these options if your pet ever needs them. Older pets or those with chronic conditions may need long-term care, which insurance can help support. This helps to remove the need to make tough financial decisions when your pet needs you most.

Which type of pet insurance policy is best?

There are several types of pet insurance available, each offering different levels of cover. Accident-only policies are usually the most basic and only provide cover for injuries caused by accidents - so illnesses, ongoing conditions or long-term care aren’t included. Time-limited policies offer cover for both illness and injury, but only for a set period (typically 12 months) from the time a condition is first treated. After that, even if your pet still needs care, the condition may no longer be covered.

Lifetime cover is the most comprehensive option, covering both accidents and illnesses for your pet’s entire life, with the cover amount resetting each year. While it may cost more upfront, at Bayswater Vets, we believe lifetime policies offer the best long-term protection. They provide peace of mind that ongoing conditions like arthritis, diabetes or skin problems won’t be excluded from cover once the policy renews. This helps you give your pet the consistent care they deserve.

Is pet insurance right for you?

Every pet and household are different. While insurance isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, it’s worth exploring what cover might suit your situation. Some policies also offer add-ons such as dental cover, behavioural therapy, or travel insurance for pets abroad. Always check what the pet insurance policy does and does not cover before you purchase it. Pre-existing conditions may not be covered.

Pet insurance can be a valuable part of responsible ownership, helping you plan for the unexpected and prioritise your pet’s health without financial worry. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you’d like to chat over your options with our team at Bayswater.
